William ‘Put’ Ah Mat

‘Put’ Ah Mat first played for Vesteys in 1919 and went on to enjoy a phenomenal career spanning over 20 years ending with Buffaloes in 1940/41.

Played in 14 NTFL grand finals, winning 7 premierships. Captain of the Buffs in 1933/34 and vice captain from 1930-33. Buffaloes Best and Fairest in 1935/36 and second in the league Best & Fairest the same year.

Given the nickname ‘Put’ due to his uncanny ability to ‘put’ the ball between the big sticks with unerring accuracy. Living up to his nickname, NTFL leading goal kicker in 1925/26 and 1931/32 and runner up in 1924/25, 1929/30 and 1932/33.

William ‘Put’ Ah Mat spent many years both as a player, coach and administrator in the NTFL and was instrumental in breaking through the racial barriers at the time and takes his rightful place in the AFLNT Hall of Fame.
