About AFL Northern Territory
AFLNT Patron
His Honour Mr Tom Pauling AO QC,
Administrator of the Northern Territory.
“We are the privileged custodians of our National sport in the Northern Territory. We are proud of our games past, we are entrusted to preside over its present and we plan for its future”
Australian Football in the Northern Territory has undergone significant change over the past 5 years. Firstly there has been a change to the governance and administration of our code through the establishment of the AFL Northern Territory Board to oversee the development and promotion of the game. Secondly, there has been a significant increase in the levels of participation by players, coaches, umpires and volunteers.
Over the last five years, the growth and interest in Australian Football has risen to unprecedented levels. The participation rate of players in the Territory is higher in comparision to anywhere else in Australia and following an increased presence of AFL clubs in the Territory, upgraded facilities in both Darwin and Alice Springs, there has been a surge of interest culminating in an AFL Premiership, NAB Cup and NAB Challenge games at Darwin and Alice Springs.
The AFLNT has as part of its strategic direction, capitalised on the interest in Australian Football being played in the Territory to grow participation and strengthen its community competitions. To do this, the AFLNT has identified six key strategic priorities as follows:
grow participation to remain the number one sport in the Territory
build the football infrastructure to provide a quality environment both on and off field
develop and oversee the conduct of sustainable and financially viable competitions
utilise the AFL games and AFL club visits to grow the interest and support for the sport
govern and administer the game in an effective and efficient manner
build the talented player pathway and infrastructure to increase the opportunity for Territory players to compete at the highest level possible
