In its inaugural year the Northern States Cup is being contested by Queensland, Northern Territory, New South Wales and the Australia Capital Territory. The Northern States Cup is an initiative of the AFL, AFL (NSW/ACT), AFLQ and AFLNT to create a participation pathway for players and schools at the Under 14 age level.

On Thursday August 14th Northern Territory held their regional finals at Southern Cross Oval in Palmerston. Five schools participated in a round robin contest which included St Johns College, Kormilda College, Sanderson Middle School, Taminmin and Palmerston. The matches started early in the morning with Kormilda, St Johns and Sanderson all registering wins in their first appearance.  Sanderson and Kormilda provided the match of the day which was a thriller that ended with a goal kicked by Jed Anderson in the dying seconds of the game.

BORGAS HITS BRISBANE WITH A BANG

BORGAS HITS BRISBANE WITH A BANG

Emerging Alice Springs and AFLNT Umpiring Academy field umpire Jeremy Borgas spent 5 days in Brisbane and recently became the 5th participant of the AFLNT-AFLQLD Umpiring Exchange Program since its conception in early 2006. A veteran already of a senior AFL Central Australian Grand Final in 2007 and he has provided us with a detail insight into his Brisbane adventure…

I was recently fortunate to have the opportunity to travel to Brisbane on an AFL Northern Territory- AFL Queensland Umpiring Exchange Program.   The trip was aimed at giving me an insight into interstate umpiring at a state league level and an idea into sports management as an occupation.

I hopped on a plane from Alice Springs Wednesday lunch time the 16th of July and arrived later that afternoon in Brisbane and when I arrived I was greeted by AFL Queensland Umpiring Programs Manager Andrew Cross and taken to my billets home.

On Thursday I was involved in assisting in umpiring administration duties at the AFL Queensland offices. This gave me an idea of some of the tasks that are performed by sports administrators that help contribute to the running of a football league. I was lucky enough to squeeze in a short walk around Southbank later in the afternoon, it was a very relaxing place and I enjoyed the scenery. Later on that evening I was put through my paces with a training session with the State League field umpires, which was very different to how the umpires train in Alice Springs. It was more intense and specialised and after training we had a special guest lecture from the AFL Umpiring Manager, Jeff Gieschen who was visiting from Melbourne.

Friday morning I was up early and hopped in the car with Andrew Cross as we headed to the Sunshine Coast and I assisted him with the running of a Basic Umpiring Course for the staff that runs AFL on the Sunshine Coast.

After arriving back from the Sunshine Coast that afternoon I walked through Brisbane Queens Street Mall which was a little daunting for me as I have never had so many people around while I was alone, but I enjoyed the experience and explored the area for myself.

On Saturday I umpired my highly anticipated state league reserves match, Mt Gravatt and Broadbeach. This was a totally different style to Central Australian football, so it was a challenge for me to adjust. After the game I received plenty of feedback from the coach and other umpires which was very helpful in my umpiring. Saturday night I was lucky enough to sit on the bench of the Brisbane-West Coast AFL match and I was shown around the change rooms to see what it were like to be an AFL player and umpire. The players and umpires that I talked with were very friendly and gave me a strong insight into being an elite athlete in the AFL.

Sunday morning I flew back to Alice Springs and umpired a local AFLCA match that afternoon, putting the things I learnt into practice. They definitely helped my performance.

I thoroughly enjoyed my trip to Brisbane, and learnt a lot about umpiring and sports administration. The highlights for me were the challenge of umpiring a totally different style of footy to that of which I umpire every weekend, and the AFL match.

I would like to personal thank Mark Noonan, AFL Northern Territory Umpiring Development Manager for organising and giving me this great opportunity, and Andrew Cross for helping organise the trip and accommodating me, plus Aaron Hall and Chris Fawcett for billeting me.

2008 AFL Community Exchange

The 2008 AFL Community Exchange program was again very successful this year thanks to the extensive planning by the Auskick centre in Melbourne. There were four communities from the Northern Territory invited on the exchange who got to experience the busy Melbourne lifestyle. This was a great experience for all involved, especially the children as most of them had never left the Territory before. Each community were given the opportunity to send six children and two community members to Melbourne, with each community accompanied by an AFLNT staff member. During the four days the three communities had the chance to meet up at the Melbourne Sports and Aquatic centre and the Melbourne Zoo, however during the rest of the exchange the community’s were in different locations.

Belyuen was one of the communities who got to experience this exchange, with three boys and three girls making the journey to the other side of the country. The children were broken up into groups of two, and were billeted out to families who have been heavily involved with the program since 2004. During the exchange the children were exposed to a range of new experiences which they have never been familiar with before.

After the four hour flight on Thursday the children were picked up by the billets and taken back to their homes where they were introduced to the families. Two of the communities then met in Richmond where they were able to watch the mighty Tigers train. After wards everyone made there way to the Melbourne Sports and Aquatic centre where they were able to leave the cold weather outside, and enjoy themselves in the heated wave pool.

The following day the children got to share a school experience with their billets, where they participated in maths competitions, reading and grammar activities as well as physical education classes. After their busy day, shopping was next on the agenda where they were able to see the range of shops that were available in a major city. The billets recommended taking them to a smaller shopping centre as the main street would be too over whelming.

Saturday morning was off to cold start as the children had the opportunity to be involved in an Auskick Centre. Here they were shown a range of activities which were based around the 2008 Beijing Olympics, which was then followed by a modified game. From here they went to the Melbourne Zoo, where they were amazed by the range of animals which they had never seen before.

The highlight for most of the children from Belyuen was the grid game at the Telstra Dome on Sunday. All of the children on the exchange were able to play at half time during the North Melbourne and Western Bulldogs game. They were blown away by the size of the stadium and the number of people there watching them.

Overall this exchange program was a once in a life time experience for the children and something that they will not forget. They all did a great job for their age and being away from home for the four days. They were able to adapt quickly to the different surroundings and adjust to living with complete strangers. The experiences they were given are irreplaceable.
