AFLNT Women's Lightning Series begins this weekend

AFL Northern Territory is excited to announce the start of the 2017 AFLNT Women’s Lightning Series this Saturday at TIO Stadium.

This year the dry season competition will be made up of two teams and the games will once again be played as a curtain raiser to the NT Thunder NEAFL home games.

The coaching staff will be overseen by State Academy Coach Jimmy Driscoll and will include former AFL player Matthew Campbell, Darwin Buffaloes Women’s Premiership coach Matthew Large, Anita Rhook, Chris Baksh and Dave Crane as Strength and Conditioning Coach.

AFL High Performance Manager Wally Gallio said “There’s no doubting that the program itself over the last 12 months has given a scope for players this year to be seen by the Adelaide Crows and the games we had last year against Tasmania and Victoria showed the National scene that there is women who can play AFL in the Northern Territory”.

The players train Tuesday and Thursday nights at the Michael Long Learning and Leadership Centre and were invited to participate after being talent identified in the 2016/17 TIO NTFL season.

From the Lightning Series squad, a Darwin team will be selected to travel to Alice Springs to play the Pink Tails in a curtain raiser to the NT Thunder vs Southport NEAFL Round 13 game on Saturday 24 June.

This weekend’s game kicks off at 4pm and entry is free until 5.15pm.
