NT THUNDER RULE REVIEW PANEL MEETS

NT THUNDER RULE REVIEW PANEL MEETS

The newly formed panel to review the NT Thunder player movement rule, has met for the first time to establish the review framework, including prioritising actions and a reporting time-line.

The review panel comprises:
Steve Rossingh, Executive Director, Sport, Venues and Indigenous Development, Department of Natural Resources, Environment, The Arts and Sport
Shaun Hardy, President, St Marys Football Club
Allan McGill, President, Tiwi Bombers
Tony Frawley, CEO, AFLNT
Jarred Ilett, CEO, NT Thunder
Michael Watkins, Sports Scientist, NT Institute of Sport
Chair and spokesperson for the panel, Mr Rossingh, said the prime outcome seeking to be achieved by the panel is to devise a fair and equitable system for player movement for all stakeholders, with player welfare the highest priority.
“This is an extremely important review, and one which must have the best interests of players at heart. With that in mind we have agreed on a number of actions to be undertaken which will assist us in our final recommendations and report.
“This includes accessing, collecting and researching existing data and information available from leading sports scientists on player workloads, what is considered safe for the player and how player welfare is monitored – as well as any other information which is relevant to our review.
“Also crucial is what the players think themselves. To this end, we will be conducting an independent survey of NT players to find out how they are feeling from both a playing and health point of view about the player movement rule. Their feedback is a key part in any final decision.
Mr Rossignh said that the review panel is committed to bringing some objectivity to the current debate.
“The panel will be meeting regularly to ensure we are on track with the review work. However, while we will be aiming for our first report to be delivered by the end of January, if this review takes longer than one month to achieve a fair and equitable outcome – then so be it. This is too important to rush.
“We have an opportunity here to set in place a player movement rule which will provide benefits for current players and players in the future.”
