Alice Springs set for Grand Final Saturday

Alice Springs Grand Final

The 2019 TIO Central Australian Football League (CAFL) season will come to an end this Saturday 7 September when the highly anticipated ‘town’ competition grand finals are played and won.

Starting with Federal taking on Pioneer in the Under 15 Boys at 11:30am and culminating with the Senior Men’s Grand Final between Rovers and South at 7:30pm it’s set to be a full day of Territory footy action at TIO Traeger Park.

Five games in all, Pioneer feature in the first four finals, while South appear in three and Rovers will battle out for the top prize in the senior women’s and men’s divisions at the end of the day.

In the Under 15 Boys, Federal finished on top of the ladder, but Pioneer beat them only four weeks ago, so it’s sure to be an exciting match to get things underway. Last year the Feds enjoyed a massive victory over the same opposition to become the premiers and remarkably it will be the third season in a row that the two teams have met in the last game of the Under 15s season.

The MacDonnell Regional Council Under 18 Boys Grand Final between Pioneer and South at 1:30pm will feature the two best teams from throughout the season. It’s the fifth straight grand final appearance for Pioneer in the Under 18s, but they’ve only one it once, a win this weekend will see them go back-to-back.

The Men’s Reserves Grand Final at 3:30pm will also feature Pioneer and South; a remarkable effort by the Roos given they just scraped into finals and won back-to-back elimination finals, by a point and then four points, to make it to the big dance. Pioneer is on a 10-game winning streak though and rightly finished atop of the ladder.

The Senior Women’s premiership title will have a new home by the end of Saturday with either the E-Girls or Rovers set to claim the spoils after their game begins at 5:30pm. The teams played only a fortnight ago in a qualifying semi-final where Pioneer led from start to end, but they’re two wins apiece in the head-to-head stakes this season. Two of the competition’s powerhouses of recent times both have tasted grand final defeat once in the past two seasons, so victory will be sweet for one of them.

The curtain will only close on the 2019 CAFL season after the biggest grand final of them all, the TIO Senior Men’s game between Rovers and South. In what is a rematch of last year’s ultimate game, this season it is the Roos who have been the more impressive of the two teams throughout 2019. However, the Rovers were first to qualify after downing South by 35 points in the qualifier only a fortnight ago. Another Double Blues victory on Saturday night will see them make it a three-peat, while South Alice is going in search of its first Senior Men’s title since 2014.

The TIO Senior Men’s game will be live-streamed via the AFLNTv Youtube channel and also broadcast live on ICTV.

Ticket prices for Saturday will be $10 for adults, $5 for children, age free for children five years and under.

AFLNT Community Football Manager for Central Australia, Darryl Griffiths said he was looking forward to another successful day of grand finals.

“With over 4,000 people attending Sunday’s community and country grand finals, we are hoping for another big crowd.

“We are all excited to see the grand finals unfold, having seen some exciting football being played during the finals series already.

“Pioneer and Rovers have been the standouts in the women’s competition this year, and the match could go either way – women’s football is growing in stature in Central Australia as it is in most places and to have two quality teams meet in the Grand Final is just what we hoped for.

“South Alice Springs was the team to beat during the home and away season in the Men’s Seniors, but their finals form has dropped off a little bit until they steamrolled over the top of Pioneer in the last quarter of the Preliminary Final last Saturday.  On the other hand, Rovers have been steady all year and had a strong win over Souths in the Semi Final setting up an intriguing match to culminate our season.

“We wish everyone participating this weekend the very best of luck,” he said.
