2020 AFL tickets and special SUNS membership now on sale for NT

Tickets now on sale for AFL 2020

Footy fans and event enthusiasts are now able to snap up tickets to two of the most premier showpieces on the Territory football calendar – 2020 Toyota AFL Premiership season matches in Darwin and Alice Springs.

With thanks to the support of the Northern Territory Government, for as little as $25 (less for concession and children) you can guarantee access to the big stars of the Territory's favourite sport.

The first match will take place at 2:50pm on Sunday 17 May when the Melbourne Football Club takes on the Adelaide Crows at TIO Traeger Park in Alice Springs as part of the AFL's Sir Doug Nicholls Indigenous Round.

This will be followed by Darwin's new home team, the Gold Coast SUNS, doing battle against St Kilda Football Club at Darwin's TIO Stadium in a twilight fixture on Saturday 13 June, commencing at 4:05pm.

Tickets went on sale on the NTix website at midday today and can also be purchased from the box office at the Darwin Entertainment Centre.

The agreement between the NT Government, the AFL and AFL Northern Territory (AFLNT) will see the Gold Coast SUNS play a game in Darwin and the Demons play a game in Alice Springs every year for four years, until 2023. It also includes an AFLW match, with Melbourne set to play Carlton next Saturday 14 March at TIO Trager Park.

Both games are expected to have Territory flavour in the playing groups.

Former Southern Districts junior Steven May will be hopeful of pulling on a Melbourne jumper in Alice Springs, while Ben Long (St Mary's) should feature for St Kilda in Darwin, and Malcolm Rosas (Darwin Buffaloes) is a chance to play for Gold Coast in the same fixture after becoming the first Territorian to head to the club under the arrangement that saw Darwin linked to the SUNS as an Academy zone.

Gold Coast SUNS star recruit, Brandon Ellis, along with fellow SUNS and NT products Rosas, Tayla Thorn and Jasmyn Hewett will be in Darwin this weekend to promote the new partnership between the side and AFLNT.

The players will be watching the 2019/20 TIO NTFL Women's Premier League Grand Final and the Men's Premier League Preliminary Final while promoting a new offering designed specifically for Darwin fans.

Gold Coast SUNS CEO, Mark Evans expanded on the Northern SUN Membership.

"It's exciting to be able to launch our new Northern SUN Membership offering.

"Northern SUNS members will receive access to not only to our Round 13 blockbuster at TIO Stadium but also two games at Metricon Stadium, members merchandise and exclusive members invites and communications."

Evans also spoke more broadly about the partnership.

"To be able to work with AFLNT and the NT Government to help develop school and community programs to positively impact and inspire the next generation is something we're really looking forward to.
"As part of our NT partnership, we are determined to support and grow Territory football including seeing more players like Malcolm Rosas Jnr, Tayla Thorn, Jasmyn Hewett, Jordann Hickey and Sally Riley come through the pathways and join the Gold Coast Suns' AFL and AFLW squads," he said.

AFLNT CEO Stuart Totham said bringing big games to the Territory increases the liveability of the NT for Territorians and provides more reasons for people to visit.

"By working collaboratively with the AFL, NT Government, Gold Coast Football Club and Melbourne Football Club, we have been able to deliver AFL and AFLW games in the NT for four years, a fantastic outcome for Territory football.

"We will be working closely with stakeholders to make these games a success, build on them as key community events and ensure they continue long after the current agreement expires.

"With a recruiting concession in Darwin that allows Gold Coast SUNS to pre-list AFL talent, we expect our numbers on the SUNS' AFL list to steadily improve over the coming years."

Acting Minister for Tourism, Sport and Culture, Eva Lawler was right behind today’s ticket release.

“AFL is the biggest participation sport in the Territory, and the Territory Labor Government’s four-year partnership with the AFL includes the Gold Cast SUNS assisting with the talent pathways in Darwin. This will provide greater opportunities for talented local players to get on AFL and AFLW lists.

“Bringing big games here is part of our Government’s commitment to creating vibrant communities, giving Territorians access to premium sporting events and driving visitation to the Territory. Many loyal footy fans will follow their team all over the country, so this is a great way of getting the NT on their destination list.
“The games are going to be great and I encourage footy fans to book their tickets now.”

Josh Mahoney, GM of Football and Casey Operations at the Melbourne Football Club said the uniqueness of the NT offered something new for footy fans to enjoy.

"We have already seen the positive impact these games in the NT have on the local community. We love that they allow young people to rub shoulders with their heroes.

"This is a unique game, playing in the shadows of the MacDonnell Ranges. All football supporters should experience this at least once in their life."
