Baird and Williams rise with the SUNS

AFLW GCS Women_430

A note from NT Thunder Women's Academy Manager, Heidi Thompson about what's been happening when she and Stephanie Williams joined Janet Baird on the Gold Coast to see what life's like as an AFLW player for the Gold Coast SUNS.
Stephanie Williams travelled to the Gold Coast from the 3 - 11 January for her AFLW club visit as part of the NAB AFLW National Academy program. Her week consisted of two field sessions and two gym sessions, where she completed a week in the life of a GS SUNS AFLW player. Steph enjoyed the experience, learning a lot along the way. Her teammates were particularly impressed with her speed out of a contest and her willingness to get involved. She looked right at home in the gym and this week sets her up for the AFLW National Academy Camp to be held in Darwin from the 11- 16 January.
Janet Baird has also been on the Gold Coast as a 'train on' member for the GC SUNS AFLW squad. Her stay of three weeks allows her to attend eight training sessions, including field, gym and match simulation against the Brisbane Lions AFLW squad. This will be a perfect opportunity to see where she is at against established AFLW players. This week, Janet has shown real composure with the ball during the drills and has enjoyed the challenge in the gym. We wish her the very best over the next two weeks as she looks to set up for a strong 2020.
This week has also been an excellent learning experience for me as I have had the opportunity to see the inner workings of an AFLW club over the week. It has been fantastic to be able pick the brains of many elite coaches at the SUNS and I thank them for being so helpful in welcoming me into their set up. I look forward to building our relationship with the Gold Coast SUNS over the year and into the future.

While we were there, we caught up with familiar faces Jordann Hickey, Jasmyn Hewitt, Sally Riley and Tayla Thorn!
