Calling all umpires ahead of the 2020/21 TIO NTFL season

Goal umpiring in action

With the 2020/21 TIO NTFL season fast approaching, the annual AFL Northern Territory (AFLNT) Umpires Come and Try night will take place at 5:30pm this Wednesday 26 August at TIO Stadium.

Season 2019/20 saw the expansion of the TIO NTFL competition, resulting in a record number of umpires across the Territory.

Umpiring is a great way to keep fit, learn the rules of the game and make friends.

NTFL umpires also get paid, earning from $30 to nearly $200 a game, so some umpires view it as a great opportunity to make extra money over the NTFL season.

The upcoming Come and Try night is open to everyone over the age of 12 and will cover off on a range of fun and different umpiring activities, with lots of prizes and giveaways before a BBQ for everyone to enjoy. If you love what you try, then there will be an opportunity to sign up as an NTFL umpire on the night.

With the majority of umpires also playing in NTFL teams, the weekend appointments process considers game schedules to ensure everyone can play one day and umpire the next.

There are no prerequisites to becoming an umpire and no previous umpiring experience or knowledge around AFL necessary because experienced umpire coaches are on hand to teach newcomers everything they need to know.

This season, fresh faces are filling the coaching roles, which will bring a new perspective to ensure the best growth and development of all umpires.

AFLNT Umpire Coordinator, Sam Cunningham, is excited for the start of the NTFL season and for the possibility of expanding the umpiring group.

"Last season saw a fantastic evolution of our umpiring group, and we are hoping to build on that again this season, starting Wednesday night.

"It is great to see so many people that are interested in getting involved and giving umpiring a go,"  Cunningham said.

The Come and Try night is open to everyone; you do not have to register to attend. However, please keep in mind the COVID-19 health practices and stay at home if you are feeling unwell.

For those who can't make it, regular training sessions for umpires are held on Mondays and Thursdays from 5.30pm at TIO Stadium.
