About The Role

The Michael Long Learning and Leadership Centre (MLLLC) in an AFL Indigenous Education Initiative. Using football as a vehicle to increase school attendance, MLLLC’s Make Your Mark and Employment Pathways Leadership Programs, focus on improving school attendance and engagement, student behaviour, completions of secondary education, work readiness and awareness of opportunities.

The MLLLC Make your Mark Leadership Program encompasses 15 weeks of community-based education and leadership lessons and a one-week residential program at the MLLLC. This program focuses on the AFL values, leadership philosophies, educational opportunities, healthy lifestyles, umpiring and teamwork.
This program simulates a short-term boarding school experience and includes visits to and engagement in, classes at local Darwin boarding schools, visits to Parliament House, the museum, the beach and other local attractions. These experiences help to develop student confidence and awareness of activities and opportunities available to them. Launched in 2018, the MLLLC Employment Pathways Program caters for students aged 14 to 17. This program includes a one week stay at the centre and provide students with awareness of employment opportunities and pathways to achieve, through engagement with local education and employment agencies.
The AFL is committed to promoting and protecting the safety and wellbeing of children and young people in our care. The AFL undertakes several screening processes to ensure the appropriate protection of children in its care.

A Day In The Life Of

  • Delivery of the MLLLC curriculum
  • Ongoing development of the AFL themed, MLLLC curriculum in line with Federal Government Indigenous Advancement Strategy and NT department of Education Indigenous Education Strategy
  • Develop relationships and provide logistical support for schools involved in the program
  • Distinguish, embrace and celebrate the culture of the communities engaged in the program
  • Ongoing development and coordination of our Education Programs
  • Promotion the MLLLC via a range of media channels
  • Acknowledge and celebrate significant national indigenous events 
  • Engage AFLNT staff, the local and broader community in cultural activities
  • Development and implementation of strategies to improve and measure attendance in communities prior to and following the residential element of the MLLLC Education Program
  • Develop, implement and report on methods to measure student learning
  • Be a positive advocate for boarding schools and stakeholders involved in the program
  • Collect relevant data and provide updates for stakeholder reports
  • Distinguish, embrace and celebrate the culture of the communities engaged in the program
  • Advise on best practice and strategy for the centre moving forward

Our Ideal Team Member


  • Bachelor of Education or similar qualification
  • Working with Children’s certification
  • Sound knowledge of schools/Indigenous Australian communities/AFLNT programs in the NT
  • Experienced classroom management skills
  • Highly developed verbal and written communication, interpersonal and negation skills
  • Demonstrated personal initiative and ability to work effectively in a team environment
  • Developed IT skills particularly Word, Excel and Publisher
  • Ability to work outside of normal business hours


  • Prior experience teaching in remote communities
  • Experience teaching literacy and numeracy at a primary level
  • Proven ability to effectively manage a diverse and extensive range of tasks concurrently
  • ESL training
  • Current NT Light Rigid
  • Senior First Aid Certificate
  • Pool supervision certificate or equivalent qualification
