2022/23 TIO NTFL WRAP: WOMEN'S PREMIER LEAGUE - ROUND 2

2022/23 TIO NTFL WRAP: MEN'S PREMIER LEAGUE - ROUND 2

Tiwi Bombers created a big piece of Women's Premier League history when they beat six-time premier St Mary's by 48 points at Gardens Oval on Saturday.

It was the Tiwi's first win in the senior competition since being admitted to the TIO NTFL WPL as its ninth side earlier this year.

Elsewhere, the women's season took a familiar turn when regular finalists Waratah and PINT recorded morale-boosting wins.

Waratah crushed reigning premier Darwin Buffettes by 72 points at TIO Stadium in the upset of the season to date and PINT demolished a youthful Palmerston by 20 goals on the nearby TIO No.2 ground.

But it was the black and red Tiwi jumpers that grabbed most of the attention from footy fans after the Bombers ladies recorded a classy 11.7 (73) to 4.1 (25) win over the Saints.

Tiwi produced a truckload of skills, including the pacy breakaways, strong marking, plenty of leg speed and kicking from both sides of the body associated with football from the islands.

The islanders broke away from St Mary's after an even first quarter, booting seven goals to one in the last three to win comfortably.

First-year coach, Jason Bonson said the win finalised a long-ago dream by the Tiwi women to field a women's side in the WPL.

"But we're also in a partnership with Tracy Village and for two of their players it was the first opportunity to sing the team song after a win in three years, so it means just as much to them to win a game like this,'' he added.

"We only meet as a team on Saturdays, so to achieve something like this is pretty special and we'll celebrate for a while yet.''

Arthurina Moreen around the ground, Maria Rioli in a midfield role and Jamie-Lee Puautjimi in an on-ball role starred for Tiwi.

Waratah rekindled memories of their glory years with a convincing win over a disappointing Buffettes side.

The reigning premier never got into the game after Tah's kicked four goals to one in the first quarter to run to a big lead.

They had good players everywhere, building on the fast start to kick another 10 goals to the Buffettes' two in the remaining quarters.

Coach Heidi Thompson was surprised with the ease of the win against a Buffettes side that ruled the women's competition last season.

"I knew we would be competitive and that we'd done enough in the pre-season to be fit and ready to go, but I certainly didn't expect that sort of a scoreline,'' Thompson said.

Naomi Celebre through the midfield with occasional runs in defence, Madeleine Jeans in the midfield with her outside run and 17-year-old Annable Kievit in a ruck-forward role stood out for the red and whites.

Jenna Singh's five goals took her to 13 for the season after two matches, a record Tahs hope will continue as the season moves into the Christmas and New Year period.

Southern Districts opened their season with a 57-point win over Wanderers at Fred's Pass, Indya Kinna, four-goal forward Rhianna Hewitt and Emma Forsyth leading from the front in the 10.11 (71) to 2.2 (14) win.

The Crocodiles held the Eagles scoreless in the last half while Sophie Berry (3) and Megan Crauford (2) added to the home side's goalkickers.

PINT consumed the young Palmerston side whole in their clash at TIO STadium's No.2 ground, Amy Chittick's four goals and three from the consistent Casey Morris keeping the Queenants on track for a big score.

The only negative for coach Rick Nolan and his brains trust was some sloppy finishing in front of goals, 17 goals from 35 scoring shots was not the result top sides are looking for.
