Maurice Rioli Jnr to debut for Richmond

MRJ

Maurice Rioli Jnr is the Territory’s newest AFL debutant, set to run out with the Richmond Tigers this weekend against North Melbourne.

Prior to being selected by Richmond at pick 51 in the NAB AFL Draft as a father-son selection following Essendon’s attempted bid to nab the small and speedy forward, Maurice represented Cazalys NT Thunder Academy in the NAB League last season.

During his 3 games in the NAB League, he excelled averaging 11 disposals, 3 inside 50s, 2 score involvements and 6 tackles.

In 2018, Maurice made his TIO NTFL Premier League debut at the age of 16 for St Mary’s Football Club and it was in this team he made for a name for himself, notably in the semi-final clash against Nightcliff Football Club, scoring four goals to seal the game.

Cazalys NT Thunder Academy Head Coach Jason Roe said it’s great to see another Cazalys NT Thunder Academy player play at the elite level.

“It’s awesome to see yet another Rioli name play senior AFL footy and continue the Rioli tradition,” Roe said.

“His ability to hunt and attack the ball as well as his opponents is a huge advantage to his game and Richmond’s style of play.

“Richmond’s strong Indigenous players and support network headed by Richmond’s Assistant Coach and Territory’s own Xavier Clarke has no doubt been highly beneficial for Maurice’s transition into the AFL.

“We know Maurice will be is an asset for the Tigers in their upcoming game this weekend and are confident he will do the family name and the Territory proud.”

Maurice Jrn is the son of the late great Maurice Rioli Snr who played 118 games for Richmond, won the prized Norm Smith Medal in the 1982 AFL Grand Final and was a three-time All Australian winner.

Three-time Premiership player and nephew Daniel Rioli is also a current player at the club.

Maurice will run out against North Melbourne at the MCG for his debut on Saturday 7 August, centre bounce 4:05pm ACST.
